Obiettivi formativi

Learning objectives

In the introduction to the course students will will acquire the basis for the distinction between two types of social skills - soft and life skills - including some basic references to those authors who were pioneers in this area or who have strongly inspired it.

A specific set of both skills are part of a diverse set of tutorials and assignments experienced by students at individual or group level.

The course is focused on 'life skills', which refer to a broad range of skills related to the existential sphere, a capacity that acquires specific features in the current post-industrial context, characterized by the maturity stage of the individualization process and the centrality of politics of life vs emancipatory politics. Theoretical references to the contemporary mindfulness-based approach are integrated with specific assignments at experiential level: students will learn various methods of mindfulness meditation practices, such as sitting and walking meditation, body scan and others.

The new emerging characteristics of digital ecosystems in the networked collaborative society will be taken into account as the dynamic backstage in which social interactions are constructed and skills enacted.

The presence/absence of those skills in the social construction of distributed ledger technologies for the social good is a topic of the last part of the course.

Teaching methods

The program will be run with diverse set of teaching and learning tools. This means that lectures are supplemented by tutorials and/or assignments. Students are engaged in collaborative activities (as class-discussions or teamwork), in order to promote independent, critical and creative feeling and thinking skills, problem-solving competencies and a compassionate approach to the emerging field of co-designed ecosystems.

Attending all the in-class assignments is relevant part (70%) of the final grades process.

Course Policy

Class attendance is mandatory.

Enrolment restrictions: max 35 students admitted.

Grading

The assessment is based on two components:

1) a number of class-assignments/exercises related to the topics of each section (70%).

Programma

Introduction to the course

- Soft skills: a definition. Scopes, methods

- Life skills: a definition. Scopes, methods

Foundations of life skills are grounded on the enactive paradigm. Influential authors in this area are Michael Polanyi, Francisco Varela, Eugene Gendlin and others.

Basic references to the field of mindfulness studies in the social context as it has been developed in the last decade. Some references include authors who were pioneers in the areas of organizational and community learning, practical wisdom in organizations, contemplative social sciences or have been an inspiration for them.

Soft Skills – Walking the Talk

Lectures and individual/group work on specific soft skills.

Reporting and discussion on specific use cases of cryptocurrencies involving the distributed ledger technologies such as Julian Assange-Wikileaks, Ross Ulbricht and the Silk Road website. Social programs involving a reputation scoring with effects to the access to social and economic resources such as the Chinese Social Credit System will be targeted as well as Amazon Alexa application or similar software.

Some of the following set of skills will be considered: conflict resolution, negotiation, listening, communicating, creative thinking (via focusing), decision making, critical thinking, flexibility, sociability, team-working, leadership, Integrity/honesty. They are part of a diverse set of tutorials and assignments experienced by students at individual or group level.

About the ethical aspects in business companies and communities, some cases will be taken into account such as: Enric Duran, Alexandra Elbakyan, Eric Snowden, Henri Falciani, The Panama Papers,  Salvatore Iaconesi and La Cura.

Life Skills Walking the Talk

Basic theoretical references to the contemporary mindfulness-based approach in the individualized networked society.

Exercises and assignments at experiential level: mindfulness practices for higher education.

Related items of the contemporary debate at completion of this part: the secular mindfulness movement and industry; reductionist views of mindfulness in neurosciences.

Life skills and their relationships with designing and co-designing digital ecosystems via distributed ledger technologies imply that they can have an influence on the formulation of an answer to the following questions:

How to manage personal data? How to develop a wise reputation model for digital transactions? Can personal qualities like generosity or compassion be tokenized?

The exercises are followed by group discussion and/or written reports.
